Workshop – Staying Safe Online
Workshop – STAYING SAFE ONLINE
This workshop is 3.5 hours in duration.
The workshop is aimed at 13 – 16 year olds, but content may be altered to suit 11- 13 year olds
It starts with a talk entitled “My Google Tail”. My Google Tail discusses how everything we do online can be tagged back to us, and is there in perpetuity. It discussed what is acceptable content and what isn’t, but above all even acceptable content can be dangerous.
There is a 20 minute question and answer slot after this as the talk raises many questions about online content.
The first workshop lasts 1 hour, and small groups will all have a case scenario to discuss and role play. Each scenario are taken from events that have happened highlighting vulnerability on line and that have cause hurt or distress. The 10 minute prepared role plays will be shared.
There is a small break followed by a short story written by Sally Asling called “Trust” which tells the tale of a girl who is stalked and taken under false pretences via her online activity. The stalker is able to trace her location through four square, her twitter geographical updates and her entries on twitter and facebook. He stalker lurked on Friendfeed to find her. The story whilst scarily detailing how the use of social media in the wrong hands can have devastating consequences also end positively with social media being able to trace, find and rescue”
The story was purposely written to highlight the dangers online, and following this there is an open debate of 6 debate topics to be openly discussed in how “Ally” the stories central character could have changed her online behaviour and raises debate questions on content. The debate also highlights dangers that are easy to spot in hindsight, and teaches how to spot warning signs online.
The workshop is rounded up by a “What to do / Who to tell” talk giving practical advice if any of the delegates feel in danger or think somone else may be.
